Are you interested in historical ceramics? Or how Islamic and Italian pottery was decorated so beautifully? Join Heather in a workshop dedicated to the traditional decorating technique- maiolica- but with a contemporary twist.

Students will have the opportunity to glaze paint up to 2 earthenware tiles (6x6 square). Tiles will be prepared and pre-dipped with a modern version of the maiolica we love, allowing students to focus on the decorating aspect of the material.

Heather will walk students through a quick history of maiolica, what it is and why it's utilized, and how you may practice it outside class. She will help students develop and transfer imagery onto the tiles, and prepare them for painting. Heather will walk students through painting tiles with traditional materials, such as oxides, as well as contemporary materials, like underglaze.

We recommend students come prepared with concepts or designs for their tiles, but there will be time to develop ideas in-class. We recommend keeping decoration fairly simple, to allow for the most success with decorating in the workshop.
