Join Zoe in a crash course in the beauty of earthenware, utilizing decoration and glazes to enhance the surface. Uncommonly used in public studios, learn and experiment with this uncommon clay!

Focusing on using earthenware (a clay we know well and love in Hamilton), students will work alongside Zoe in the construction of slab built trays and plates. From rolling the slab, working with bisque moulds, attaching feet, as well as other additives, students will create a piece from start to finish intended for functional or decorative use.

After the lunch break, pieces will be unmoulded from their bisque moulds and prepared for decoration. Learn how to tidy feet, rims, and add sculptural elements to your pots for a little bit more charm. Learn image transferring techniques, taking tracings from life and applying them to your pots. Understand and explore the building of narrative, composition, and colour.
With Stroke and Coat glazes, students will apply glazes to their pieces at leatherhard, and refine their skills in sgraffito decoration techniques. Zoe will work through the process step by step, showing students how to layer and mix colours effectively, as well as how to choose colours and decoration that works cohesively.

In this session, students will also have a chance to explore terra sigillata on bone dry clay, learning how to incorporate an ancient material in their practice.

By the end of the session, glazing possibilities will be discussed.
Prior to pickup, pieces will be glaze fired if desired, or only bisqued.

Pieces will be ready for pick-up 2-3 weeks after the workshop.
