Join Marina Van Raay for a day, studying her own practice of both explorations in nerikomi
and handbuilding with coloured clay. Participants will explore how to use coloured clay to create rich surface patterns and designs, learning both traditional and experimental approaches to this unique technique.

Marina will begin with an introduction and presentation, sharing examples of nerikomi work and discussing how coloured clay can be used for surface decoration in handbuilding. Demonstrations will be shown throughout the class in how to prepare coloured clay from start to finish (using stains), followed by basic nerikomi patterns, in a less-restrained approach.

Students will move onto making small vessels with coloured clay, using techniques such as coiling and pinching. They will experiment with various techniques to create coloured patterns in vessels.
In addition to coloured clay handbuilding, students will develop nerikomi and coloured clay tiles, where they can create tiles or small slab-based objects. Different nerikomi methods will be explored, from constructing patterned blocks to rolling coloured patterns directly onto tile surfaces. Discussion of incorporating all the methods will be covered.

At the end of the day, Marina will hold an optional group discussion and feedback session, offering a chance to share work, exchange tips, and reflect on the process. For those having their pieces glazed through the studio, examples will be provided to show the effects of a clear glaze versus the raw, unglazed finish. Students may collect their objects as bisqueware if desired.

Pieces will be ready for pick-up 2-3 weeks after the workshop.
